Dear CBI Family and Friends,

Over the past eight months, our beloved CBI community stayed connected through online classes, thought-provoking drashot, outdoor in-person services, the Shabbat Companion, baby simchas, bar and bat mitzvah celebrations, shiva gatherings, and Yizkor services. Rabbi Cohen and Maharat Sutton continue to provide inspiring spiritual leadership to our community and support to those in need. And in accord with county public health protocols, we were able to welcome preschool children back to Gan Shalom over the summer.

At this time, we are grateful for the countless shul volunteers whose dedicated work helped us foster community despite the challenges of physical distancing. Your participation, engagement, generosity, and support have been critical in keeping us deeply connected.

This year, more than ever, we need your support in meeting our 2021 Phone-a-thon goal of $30,000. This annual fundraiser helps bridge the gap between incoming commitments and outgoing expenditures to support the meaningful programming and events held throughout the year. We have also incurred pandemic-related expenses, such as costs associated with enabling Gan Shalom to open safely and rental fees for equipment at our outdoor services.

Our CBI 5781 program outlines a broad range of classes, scholars-in-residence, online social groups, social justice opportunities, and more. We have much to look forward to in the coming months. None of this is possible without your support. We salute you for your past generosity and ask you to help get the job done again this year.

The 2021 CBI Phone-a-thon will take place on Sunday morning, January 31st. We realize that the pandemic has had a significant financial impact on some of our members. Therefore, we ask that you increase your giving over last year’s donation if your resources permit it. Know that any amount you are able to give will be appreciated. If you want to have this donation credited to your 2020 tax return, please consider giving before the end of December! If you would prefer, you can make your donation in one of five ways:

  • Donate below
  • Send a check to CBI, with “2021 Phone-a-thon” on the memo line. Checks can be sent to Congregation Beth Israel, c/o 432 60th Street, Oakland, CA 94609
  • Via Zelle (our handle is office@cbiberkeley.org).
  • Send payment through Venmo to @CBI-Berkeley.
  • Call the office (510) 843-5246 to make a pledge by phone; your pledge will be added to your CBI statement.

Donors will be recognized for their support in the Spring issue of Chai Lights in five categories, according to their level of giving:
$18 – $179: Supporters
$180 – $499: Guardians
$500 – $999: Sustainers
$1,000 – $1,999: Pillars
$2,000 – $4,999: Innovators
$5,000+: Visionaries

If you don’t call us, we’ll call or text you on January 31! We look forward to speaking to every member of the CBI family!

Best regards, and todah rabbah!
